Noteworthy Movie Editors

The following is an excerpt from a job application questionnaire that I recently filled out for a video editing position. The question was "As a video editor, whose work do you admire?"

I admire the work of editors such as Chris Dickens and Jonathan Amos, who have worked repeatedly with Edgar Wright, and David Moritz and Andrew Weisblum, who have worked repeatedly with Wes Anderson. They blend their directors’ styles with the logical extrapolation of Eisenstein’s montage theory to create a kind of visual poetry that so naturally enhances storytelling. One of the most essential things I learned in film school is “Show, don’t tell.” In other words, show with cuts and actions what might have otherwise been stated in dialog. These filmmakers exemplify the greatest practitioners of this rule.
